Weekend Whammy: Switch Lite, Mobile Games & Batman & Robin

It’s way too damn hot. Sleep has become impossible because my sheets have melted together to form some sort of sentient being that whispers terrifying things in my ear at night. Or that might have just been a heat-induced nightmare, I dunno. Anyway, the weekend is officially over yet again, and that means it’s time for a Weekend Whammy! One review this week which is for Gorn, a rather brilliant VR brawler that is responsible for several dents in my table and in my knuckles. While it may not be the deep, chunky game that VR is still waiting for it is a game that lets you rip heads off using your bare-hands. Now that’s a selling point. I bit the bullet and bought Wolfenstein: Youngblood. The early trailers did not fill me full of confidence and I’m already regretting my purchase thanks to the amazing Skill Up’s review of the game. Stay tuned for my own views on it. So, I might sort have started playing The Witcher 3 again and let it kinda consume my life. Again. I have no regrets. A...

74% Of Adults Have Been Harassed While Gaming Online, Study Says

74 percent of adults who play games online have experienced some form of harassment, according to a new report released today. The report, published Thursday by the century-old civil rights nonprofit organization Anti-Defamation League, offers some staggering statistics on the prevalence of trolling, threats, discrimination, and just plain rude name-calling in online gaming. Alongside a survey of over 1,000 people who play games, the ADL also looked at game publishers’ moderation of those spaces, and found them wanting. “Large-scale commercial games have these aspects of their platform that are totally unmoderated spaces,” said Daniel Kelley, the associate director of ADL’s center for Technology and Society, to Kotaku. “We know from places like 4chan or 8chan that unmoderated spaces become toxic.” How toxic? Some of the numbers that came from the study, conducted in April of this year, are mind-boggling. 65 percent of the players surveyed experienced “severe harassment,” which includes...

Young Women Are Reclaiming The Slur ‘Egirl’

Image: Ash Eldridge (Instagram) Jayden “YourPrincess” Diaz is haunted by the term “egirl.” A League of Legends streamer competing among the top two percent of players, Diaz hasn’t been able to escape it for years—every day in Twitch chat, in League of Legends games and across social media. “I let it really hurt me,” Diaz, 20, told Kotaku of the word, which she defines as a woman who “exploits the fact that she’s a girl to get attention online.” Diaz, with curled lengths of brown hair and a polished fashion sense, says viewers have called her a glorified camgirl throughout her career as a professional gamer. “I let it control even the role I played in League,” she explained, adding, “I used to main support, but I stopped playing support because I hated being called a ‘boosted egirl,’” or a woman whose high League rank was earned by someone else. Alienware 13 Laptop Review

Review unit supplied by Alienware for testing. The Alienware name has always split opinions, with many viewing the company as overpriced while others see them as creating luxury products that are worth the extra money. Regardless of where you stand on the brand I think we can generally agree that they make solid machines, and I’ve gotten to review a few of them. I’m back again, this time with a chunky gaming laptop sporting an equally chunky asking price. Running at a resolution of 1440p one could almost view it as overkill for the relatively small 13.3″ panel as higher resolutions sometimes aren’t all that beneficial unless on bigger screens where those extra pixels can make all the difference. However, since you’re traditionally going to be sitting quite close to the laptop the higher resolution makes a notably pleasing difference when gaming or just browsing the web thanks to detailed images. With that said whether you’ll personally be able to notice and appreciate the 225.9 pixe...

Thunderobot ST-Plus Laptop Review

In the past, I’ve often failed to see the appeal of gaming orientated laptops, largely because their battery life is so short that taking one on a train journey or something seems a bit pointless if there’s no nearby wall socket handy. Still, sitting in the middle of the woods playing The Witcher 3 is kind of cool. The laptop I was using to do this is the ST-Plus from Thunderobot, a predominantly western company who are now seeking to move into the eastern market with their products. As this is my first laptop review let’s see if I can muddle through this with my already limited dignity intact. Let’s talk about aesthetics and build quality before we get into the juicy details about what’s underneath. The body is made entirely of plastic which doesn’t quite give the same premium feel as something like brushed aluminium but does help ensure a reasonable weight of 2.5. It feels solidly built with little creaking, the exception being around the screen where a bit of pressure sees the who...
