Sell, Loot, Repeat, Profit

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PS4 Reviewed On: Xbox One Developer: Digital Sun Publisher: 11 Bit Studios Singleplayer: Yes Multiplayer: No Review code provided free of charge by the publisher. D id you ever wonder how the shops in RPG games so often stock amazing, unique weapons? Where do they keep getting them from? A number of games have sought to put you into the shoes of the shopkeepers, selling items to adventurers who will run off to fight strange beasts rather having YOU be the one to do all the adventuring. Moonlighter wants you to do both, though, explaining that the reason shops have these amazing items is because the people who run them are adventurers, too. By day Will is a humble shopkeeper looking to sell his wares for the best price possible to customers looking for interesting items. But by night Will moonlights (HA!) as an adventurer, delving into the mysterious dungeons in order to acquire new loot to sell in his shop while also trying to unlock the fifth door, do...

Having Someone To Pass The Controller To Makes Single-Player Games Better

Illustration: Respawn Kotaku Game Diary Daily thoughts from a Kotaku staffer about a game we're playing.     I don’t play a ton of shooters, but after getting super obsessed with Apex Legends, I wanted to try Titanfall 2. I also wanted my boyfriend to try Titanfall 2, but I’d always rather play with someone sitting on the couch than online. Me and my boyfriend live about 10 minutes from each other—it would just feel silly to me. Since I had already convinced him to grab the game while it was on sale, this weekend I asked if he wanted to boot it up, just to check it out. We ended up having a wonderful time, and through the insight I gained just from passing the controller, I got farther than I had on my own. Since I grew up with an older brother, passing a controller back and forth for single-player games has always felt pretty natural to me. Whenever my brother got frustrated or needed to rest his hands, he passed the controller to me. I didn’t often play well, but sometimes by ge...

Microtransactions! Unlimited Microtransactions!

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PS4 Reviewed On: PC Developed by: DICE Published by: EA Singleplayer: Yes Multiplayer: Yes There is a well-known line in the Star Wars movies that applies perfectly here. “You were the Chosen One! You were supposed to destroy the Sith, not join them. You were supposed to bring balance to the force, not leave it in darkness.” Of course, it’s the scene in Revenge of the Sith where Obi-Wan Kenobi faces down his former Padawan and friend Anakin Skywalker, or as he now calls himself, Darth Vader. Still, it’s apt here. While last years Battlefront left a lot of people feeling let-down I still quite enjoyed it despite its issues. I had high hopes for a sequel, and yet EA managed to fall deeper into the Dark Side, taking the beloved Star Wars name with it. Reviewing this game has proven to be a hell of a challenge. Due to the massive and completely deserved backlash, EA decided to temporarily remove their microtransactions from Battlefront 2 at the last second,...

Destiny Players Are Getting Fed Up With A Ridiculous Grenade Launcher Quest

For months, hardcore Destiny 2 players have been trying to scale their way up to a seemingly impossible mountaintop. The Mountaintop, in fact… because that’s the name of a Legendary grenade launcher in Destiny 2 that many players have coveted for a long time. It is, as its name implies, incredibly labor-intensive to get, with no real work-arounds other than to just buckle down and do the work. Trouble is, “doing the work” makes you play Destiny 2 like a bit of a jerk. The Mountaintop is a Pinnacle Weapon, a type of Legendary weapon introduced with Destiny 2’s Forsaken expansion. They’re top-tier legendary weapons introduced at the start of a new season, and players are meant to spend that whole season trying to grind them out. In other words, they’re meant to be a lot of work. To get Mountaintop, you have to complete three steps once you’ve received the “First of Many” pursuit from Lord Shaxx in the Tower: Reach the Glory rank “Brave” in the Crucible within a season. Use grenade launch...

Japan's Getting A Disney-Themed Nintendo Switch

On October 10, Nintendo will be releasing this very Japan-only Nintendo Switch model, which is covered in images and logos from Disney’s Tsum Tsum line. There’s a game (Tsum Tsum Festival) that this whole thing is centred around, and the bundle includes this software, along with some DLC for the game. But more interesting is the custom Switch hardware. In addition to a Tsum Tsum-themed dock, there are also Tsum Tsum Joy-Cons, with Mickey Mouse’s ears popping out of the Home button.
