Weekend Whammy: Switch Lite, Mobile Games & Batman & Robin

It’s way too damn hot. Sleep has become impossible because my sheets have melted together to form some sort of sentient being that whispers terrifying things in my ear at night. Or that might have just been a heat-induced nightmare, I dunno. Anyway, the weekend is officially over yet again, and that means it’s time for a Weekend Whammy! One review this week which is for Gorn, a rather brilliant VR brawler that is responsible for several dents in my table and in my knuckles. While it may not be the deep, chunky game that VR is still waiting for it is a game that lets you rip heads off using your bare-hands. Now that’s a selling point. I bit the bullet and bought Wolfenstein: Youngblood. The early trailers did not fill me full of confidence and I’m already regretting my purchase thanks to the amazing Skill Up’s review of the game. Stay tuned for my own views on it. So, I might sort have started playing The Witcher 3 again and let it kinda consume my life. Again. I have no regrets. A...

Weekend Whammy: Stabbing People in VR, ACC Being A Pain & More

Once again I’m a little late with my Weekend Whammy, but that’s what happens when both nieces come to stay for the entire weekend. It. Was. Chaos. I love them both dearly but by Odin’s hairy arse they are a handful, especially together. Argument after argument between them drives everyone else crazy. And to make it worse the youngest one decided to leap off a chair, grab me round the neck and dig her fingers into all the muscles and tendons. Who the hell knew small children could be so dangerous? Of course, this week has been all about E3. There’s a lot to cover, so I’m going to do a Patch Notes talking about the things that I found most interesting. So this week I reviewed the rather excellent Blood & Truth for PS VR. I never knew I wanted to be in a cockney crime thriller so much, but Blood & Truth makes it heaps of fun. The action set-pieces always make you feel like you’re a badass, the acting is great and the story is some light, fun fluff. Sony continue to kill it wit...

Weekend Whammy: Anno That Game, Zombies & Game of Thrones

Today I bathed my white German Shepard which is an immense task. I’ve got a small fenced in area which is perfect for the actual bathing part, but once he’s loose in the garden the fun begins. Getting dried is an excuse for him to run around the garden like a freaking lunatic, bouncing off of bushes, skidding around corners and sliding underneath the trees. It took something like three hours to get him bathed, semi-dried and semi-brushed. But he had heaps of fun and proceeded to collapse into a sleepy heap. It’s a hard life being a dog. But anyway. Lets get on with this, shall we? The first review of the week was of World War Z, a surprisingly fun co-op shooter with hefty Left 4 Dead influence. Without question the star of the show are the massive zombie hordes that just come pouring over the landscape. It’s heaps of fun on harder difficulty settings to hold off the tide of corpses with three other people. Ultimately I went in with no real expectations and came out the other side cov...

Weekend Whammy: Skate 3 & The Bloody Rose Band

Why, hello there fine people! Come in, come! Fancy a cuppa? I hope you guys are keeping well and playing hard. There’s a fair few games out at the moment, so we aren’t lacking in choice. Anyway, let’s chat about what I’ve been playing, and please do let me know what you’ve been playing and what you think of it. So, this week I put out a pretty long review of Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 which I ultimately gave a 4 out of 5 too. I was really impressed by how much of an improvement it is over the first game, and how thoroughly it kicked Anthem’s backside. A satisfying swathe of main missions, great loot system and solid end-game all create a game that actually feels good at launch rather than trying to persuade people it’ll be good in the future. The Division 2 is good now, and will hopefully only grow and get better with time. I’m still playing The Division 2 as well, which says something about the strength of its combat and looting. At the moment I’m gearing myself up for the release...

Weekend Whammy: Getting Dirty & Training Dragons

I’m getting old for this Saturday night drinking malarkey. I’m old before my time, I guess. So let’s keep this short and sweet, shall we? This week I put out my review of DiRT Rally 2.0 which I freaking loved! As we near launch I’m getting pretty excited to test out my skills on the Rallycross tracks against everybody else. By which I mean I’m excited to inevitably lose a lot. I also reviewed a PS VR title by the name of Intruders: Hide and Seek wherein you play as a young lad trying to deal with three strangers who have broken into the house. It has a couple of good points and the VR does enhance the experience, but as I said in the review it made me constantly wish for an official Alien Isolation VR patch. I’ve been sinking some serious time into Crackdown 3, too. And do you know what? It’s actually not bad. It’s certainly not great, but I think it might have got harsher reviews than it truly deserves. Though it has issues with repetitive mission design, lack of story and more th...

Weekend Whammy: Whatcha Playing?

The weekend has once again arrived like an apple being hurled at a doctor to make them away, and that means it’s time for GAMES! and movies. So, lately, I’ve been hammering some hours into Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the final game in the trilogy that I’ve thus far really loved. It’s going to be a tricky one to review, but in essence, I think it’s a good game, but it’s also somewhat unexciting in the sense that very little has changed since Rise of the Tomb Raider. I wish the series could have gone out with more of a bang rather than a whimper. But hey, Shadow of the Tomb Raider does have one awesome moment where Lara rises out of the water with a massive fire raging behind her. It’s so badass that even the Terminator would respect it. Dead by Daylight has sucked me back into its unique brand of asymmetrical horror, a game where a single person plays the killer while everyone else must escape. It’s still a technical mess and has a bunch of stupid design decisions that instead of rec...

Weekend Whammy: What Are You Guys Playing?

The weekend has steamrolled into our lives yet again like some sort of demented rhino looking for its lunch. As I write this I’ve just gotten back from walking the dog and taking my two nieces to the funfair that’s in town, so now it’s time to sit down and fire up some games! So, I’ve managed to resist spending all my time on the absolutely amazing Spider-Man on the PS4 and instead have focused on getting through two games, the first being the new Bard’s Tale title that I got my hands on a good bit before its official release and yet have still somehow managed to fly past the embargo without posting up a review. The problem is I have really mixed feelings on the game that have proven tricky to put into words. It’s a bit of a mess at times with numerous technical failings as well as a bunch of questionable design choices, but buried underneath it all is an interesting little RPG with great turn-based combat and some enjoyable puzzles. I also bought a copy of Shadow of the Tomb Raider...

Grab A Beer: What Are You Playing This Weekend?

I was going to start up this series last weekend, but I wound up getting gifted some tickets to go see one of my favourite bands, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, in Glasgow. It was awesome. That’s all. Just thought you should know. Anyway, the point here is that while I’m beyond privileged to get loads of viewers on this site I’d love to see more comments and chances to chat to people, so I’m hoping this will encourage some folks to jump on and start chatting. LET’S DO THIS! Firstly, I’ve been ramming my head repeatedly against a wall, a wall named Dead Cells. It’s a pixellated 2d rogue-like/rogue-lite (I really need to learn the difference) where death is commonplace and every little step forward is earned via gallons of your own blood. So far Dead Cells has gotten itself a load of critical praise from a bunch of sites and even managed to create a small scandal in the form of an IGN employee committing plagiarism, and I have to agree with the positive views; it’s a bloody good game ...

The Top 10 Board Games I Played In 2017

This list might be a bit late, but I can’t help it; I was playing board games. The point is 2017 was a good year for board games, and being just one person I missed so many amazing games, but I did catch some good ones, too. All in all I reviewed over twenty games in 2017, and played quite a few more, so here’s a list of my nine favorite games that I played in 2017. Do note the wordage, there; these aren’t all 2017 releases, just games that I got around to playing and reviewing that year. Lisboa We’re kicking off with a game that I’m in the process of writing a review for, and failing miserably because sweet baby Jesus, there’s a lot going on! Lisboa is the latest game from genius Vital Lacerda, and is about the rebuilding of Lisbon in the 1700’s following a series of natural disasters that left the city in ruins. You’ll be visiting nobles, constructing new buildings, selling goods and even dealing with the Church in this deep, wonderfully thematic game. The problem is that writing...

Overwatch's New Hero Sigma Is Slow But Scary

What would you do if you could control gravity? Would you float everywhere? Hurl boulders at people? Yell all the time about a mysterious melody that haunts your every semi-lucid moment? Overwatch’s newest hero, the unhinged, accidentally evil astrophysicist Sigma, can do all of that and more. He’s fun to play, but he definitely takes some getting used to. When I first started playing Sigma on Overwatch’s PC public test server earlier today, I felt uncomfortable. Despite the fact that his notably naked toesie-wosies hover about a foot off the ground at all times, he moves at a glacial pace, like most tanks. His primary attack—two “Hypersphere” projectiles that look like they were stolen from a Destiny merchandise stand—also travels a bit more slowly and arcs in a more exaggerated fashion than you might initially expect, and it has a fairly limited range. Taken together, these things make him feel a little awkward, perhaps even vulnerable. This makes sense: He’s a barely-coherent old ma...
