Wait, Is It The 90's Again?

Ah, the 90’s were a hell of a time for the real-time strategy genre. It was the birthplace of one of my favorite games of all time; Total Annihilation. It was also the time of Command & Conquer, Age of Empires, Homeworld and Starcraft. It seems that developer Pathos Interactive view this as a golden age, too, because Bannermen feels and looks like it was ripped out of the 90’s and shoved into 2019. The problem is, even by the standards of the 90’s Bannermen isn’t very interesting. The campaign follows a chap by the name of Lord Berrian who, along with everyone else, gets his arse kicked by an evil lord named Karthor. Due to his bruised backside Berrian sets out to take Karthor down and free the kingdom from evil. From there a few minor characters get introduced, but if you’re looking for a deep, engrossing plot then Bannermen is not it. What you do get is a series of 18 fairly basic missions that have you building bases, crushing armies or occasionally dabbling in some light st...

I have No Idea What Spinnortality Means

These days there are very valid fears surrounding massive corporations, the power that they wield and how much of the world they already control. Their influence is often terrifying, especially when you begin to research how only a few corporations own the vast majority of the media we consume. The point is, Spinnortality plays on problems in an entertaining strategy game about making money, pushing around governments and directing Earth toward the future you want. Oh, and you can build a giant laser on the moon. The general gist is easy to understand; a mysterious and shady board of very rich people have appointed you the new head of a corporation with the express goal of eventually researching technology that will make the board and yourself immortal. To do that you’ll need to amass a fortune by launching fancy new products across the world, and in order to do that you might have to nudge a few laws here or there. So, I subtly named my company Evil. Co and began my journey to the...

Testing The 'Ol Grey Matter

Platforms: Playstation VR, PC Reviewed On: PS4 Pro Developer: Vertical Robot Publisher: Vertical Robot Singleplayer: Yes Multiplayer: No Oh boy, oh boy, it’s time to attempt my first official PSVR review, and we’re kicking things off with a good ‘un! As the mute and nameless protagonist of Red Matter you’ve been dispatched to one of Saturn’s moons in order to retrieve secret documents from the enemy known as The People’s Republic of Volgravia. But things aren’t what they seem as something strange and a tad sinister has occurred at the base. Don’t get your knickers in a twist, though, because this a puzzle-driven experience from start to finish. Despite the technology required to create a base on one of Jupiter’s moons there’s a distinctly 1950’s vibe to Red Matter that stems from Volgravia’s obvious cold-war Russia influences. The Volgravian crest, for instance, instantly evokes feelings of the Soviet Union as does the style of architecture and unforms, and developer Vertical Robot ...

Spyro: Reignited Trilogy Review

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4 Reviewed On: PS4 Pro Developer: Toys for Bob Publisher: Activision Singleplayer: Yes Multiplayer: No While the storied history of Insomniac Games began with Disruptor in 1998 it was the release of Spyro the Dragon in 1999 that put them on the map. Two sequels would follow, and the three games would tally up sales of over 8-million collectively while Insomniac went on to create Ratchet & Clank and Resistance before releasing Marvel’s Spider-Man earlier this year. Now, Insomniac’s Spyro trilogy has come back courtesy of some serious work from Toys for Bob. How does the purple dragon and his antics hold up in 2018? This is basically a rebuild of the three games from the ground up, including a whole new engine, tightened controls, character redesigns and more. Taking such a beloved classic series and altering aspects of the gameplay or design is a risky proposition since die-hard fans expect nothing less than perfection and are always ready to ravenously des...
