Weekend Whammy: Anno That Game, Zombies & Game of Thrones

Today I bathed my white German Shepard which is an immense task. I’ve got a small fenced in area which is perfect for the actual bathing part, but once he’s loose in the garden the fun begins. Getting dried is an excuse for him to run around the garden like a freaking lunatic, bouncing off of bushes, skidding around corners and sliding underneath the trees. It took something like three hours to get him bathed, semi-dried and semi-brushed. But he had heaps of fun and proceeded to collapse into a sleepy heap. It’s a hard life being a dog. But anyway. Lets get on with this, shall we? The first review of the week was of World War Z, a surprisingly fun co-op shooter with hefty Left 4 Dead influence. Without question the star of the show are the massive zombie hordes that just come pouring over the landscape. It’s heaps of fun on harder difficulty settings to hold off the tide of corpses with three other people. Ultimately I went in with no real expectations and came out the other side cov...

Gun Club VR (PSVR) Review

Platforms: Oculus Rift, Vive, PSVR Reviewed On; PS4 Pro Developer: The Binary Mill Publisher: The Binary Mill Singleplayer: Yes Multiplayer: Leaderboards I t’s easy to criticize the amount of wave-based shooters available for VR, but the genre is especially suited to virtual reality, perhaps even more so with PSVR where real-life movement is limited. Gun Club VR is yet another wave-based shooter, sure, yet it wants to set itself apart with an emphasis on realism. Give it a few hours and you’ll feel like John freakin’ Wick. Just with, y’know, that gun-fu part. Or the dead puppy. Or the smashed car. So kick back and read my review of Gun Club VR. Before you get your hands on a gun the game quickly asks you to adjust your height until you feel happy, which is a great option to have included. You can also tweak the grip angle of weapons until you find the exact right setting for you. It’s not exactly as extensive as the raft of options in Borderlands 2 VR, but it’s solid enough. There...

They Are Billions Early Acess Review

Platforms: PC Reviewed On: PC Developer: Numantian Games Publisher: Numantian Games Singleplayer: Yes Multiplayer: No I don’t often cover titles in Early Access, but the simple fact is that these games, which are still in development, are asking for customers money, and thus it might be worth covering at least some of them.  Numantian Games latest effort has gotten itself a pretty big following so far, so let’s take a look at it. They Are Billions takes a few things and mashes them together, fusing a rather pretty steampunk aesthetic with RTS mechanics and then mixing in masses of rotting zombies for good measure. There’s nothing particularly new under the hood of this Early Access hit, but so far its RTS mechanics and tower-defense vibe have been executed very well. Right now there is a single mode to enjoy named Survival which tasks you with a seemingly simple task; survive until a certain number of days against a series of increasingly large and increasingly tough zombie h...

Dead Purge: Outbreak Review

Platforms: PC Reviewed On: PC Developer: Microlith Games Publisher: Microlith Games Singleplayer: Yes Multiplayer: No Review code provided free of charge by the developers Ah, zombies. When in doubt zombies are the answer to a developer’s lack of creativity. Whenever you can’t come up with something unique or even just a fun spin on the standard zombie theme you can simply pile a bunch of generic shamblers into a level, give the player a gun and call it a day. That honestly feels like what happened to Microlith Games, the developers of Dead Purge: Outbreak. The first thing I noticed when firing up Dead Purge was LCD screens emblazoned with the words, “Office Pack.” Yes, Dead Purge uses a number of assets bought directly from various stores, and the developers seemingly didn’t even bother to alter the screens scattered around the Police Station level. However, to the developer’s credit they have at least been upfront about their use of purchased assets on the Steam forums, thei...

Four Years Later, Players Are Still Digging Up New Black Ops 3 Easter Eggs

Call of Duty fans are still finding Easter eggs that were squirreled away deeply in Black Ops 3, four years after its release, thanks to dedicated data miners. Over the years, Call of Duty Zombies has become much more than simply a horde mode for surviving endless waves of the undead. Today, it’s well-known for being packed with complex story twists and hidden secrets, and has a community dedicated to rooting them out. Treyarch, the originator of Zombies, is known for hiding tons of surprises within its Zombies maps These Easter eggs could be something as small as a hidden item or coded message on the map, while larger eggs require specific actions to be performed to unlock a special weapon, song, or story-related cutscene. Treyarch senior executive producer Jason Blundell has long teased that undiscovered and perhaps impossible Easter eggs still remain in the Black Ops series. But maybe he didn’t count on data miners. Some of these otherwise undiscoverable eggs are now being unearthed...
