Patch Notes: Epic Games Call Out Steam

I’m a little late posting this weeks Patch Notes but in my defence I was away watching Avengers: Endgame and still haven’t really recovered from it. There wasn’t a lot of news that really grabbed my attention this week, so I’m just going to focus on two pieces, both involving Epic! Oh, Epic, you just keep providing so much material. Epic Under Fire Due To Work Conditions Regardless of what you think of Epic there’s no denying that they’ve turned themselves into a massive name constantly spawning headlines. This latest one is most definitely negative. Polygon recently put a piece in which they had conducted around a dozen interviews with Epic employees over the last couple of months. What those people had to say is quite damning. Apparently 70-hour work weeks were a common thing, with some people even reporting 100-hour weeks. While this ludicrous amount of work was officially voluntary, Polygon’s interviewees stated that it was “expected.” According to members of Epic’s staff while...

Smoke and Sacrifice Review

Platforms: PC, Switch, Xbox One, PS4 Reviewed On: Xbox One X Developer: Solar Sail Games Publisher: Curve Digital Singleplayer: Yes Multiplayer: No Review code supplied free of charge by the publisher. There are a lot of survival games centred around crafting out there, so Smoke and Sacrifice has its work cut out when it comes to standing out from the crowd. Initially released back in 2018 for PC and Switch, Smoke and Sacrifice has made its way to Xbox One and Playstation 4 for 2019. Has it been worth the wait? The game opens in a beautiful village bathed in sunlight. As single mom Sachi you finish up your day of toil and then head towards home to collect your son, Lio. AN important ceremony involving the child is mentioned so you head off toward that, but it turns out to be a more nefarious affair. Reaching the temple you place the child on an altar and watch as it is seemingly sacrificed in a puff of smoke. This ritual sacrificing of firstborn children is at the behest of the l...

I Finally Understand The Appeal Of Escaping Into A Video Game To Cope With Stress

Kotaku Game Diary Daily thoughts from a Kotaku staffer about a game we're playing.     For most of my life, I never quite understood escapism. I knew how powerful video games could be, how seductive and wonderful their worlds were, but I never quite understood the idea of wanting to melt through the screen and leave the real world behind. After I’ve had string of rotten luck and high stress, among the most intense in my life, that has changed. I get it now. I get why folks want to fade away into the digital and why it can be so tempting to lose yourself elsewhere. For example, I recently got very sick, and during that time, I buoyed myself with Final Fantasy XIV’s latest expansion, “Shadowbringers.” My reward was an RPG campaign that was one of the best I’ve played in a long time. That was my first real taste of how powerful it was to push real-life worries away with a game. Sure, at previous times in my life, I’ve done this type of thing in small bursts. Played Counter-Strike when...

Streamer Apologizes For Throwing Her Cat

Screenshot: Natalia Mogollon (Twitter) Natalia Mogollon, who streams under the name “Alinity Divine” on Twitch, was playing Apex Legends on camera on July 18 when she took her cat from off her desk and threw it behind her, a clip that soon went viral. Mogollon has since apologized for it, while others, including from inside Twitch, are calling for her to temporarily be banned from the platform. The incident blew up on social media Friday, where it was eventually picked up by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which shared a clip of it on Twitter to its over 1 million followers. “Take a stand for cats & please remove Alinity from @Twitch immediately,” PETA wrote. “She is using the platform to post animal abuse, which sends a dangerous message to anyone watching her videos. Cats are not props to abuse for more views.” PETA hasn’t always been known for engaging in debates around the humane treatment of animals in good faith, and there’s no evidence that Mogollon threw her c...

Japan's Getting A Disney-Themed Nintendo Switch

On October 10, Nintendo will be releasing this very Japan-only Nintendo Switch model, which is covered in images and logos from Disney’s Tsum Tsum line. There’s a game (Tsum Tsum Festival) that this whole thing is centred around, and the bundle includes this software, along with some DLC for the game. But more interesting is the custom Switch hardware. In addition to a Tsum Tsum-themed dock, there are also Tsum Tsum Joy-Cons, with Mickey Mouse’s ears popping out of the Home button.
