Weekend Whammy: Is Crash Team Racing The Game Of The Year?

Y’know, I’m going to have to start calling these Whenever Whammys considering how often I aim for the weekend, sail right past it and wind up trying to figure out what day it is again. But on with the show, loyal minions! I mean readers! The first of two reviews this week was for F1 2019, which as you might have guessed is the newest game in long-running racing series from the folks over at Codemasters. Like any yearly franchise based on a real-life sport the F1 games have struggled to keep things interesting, but they did a good job this year by including the Formula 2 series and official online league support. The real-world Formula 1 is due to get some fairly big rule shifts in the next few years, with the aim being to combat the lack of overtaking the sport has been suffering. These changes might just prove to be a nice kick in the pants for the video games. It might even be enough to entice players who haven’t picked up an F1 game in a few years to catch up and feel the new rul...

Weekend Whammy: More Mordhau, Peggle 2 & Why Motivational Mute Is Awesome

Hello again my friends, enemies and people that I barely care about. The weekend has been and gone yet again, leaving in its wake a trail of unconscious bodies. Just one review this week which was of The Sinking City, a new open-world detective game from Frogware based upon the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. Frogware previous made some pretty good Sherlock Holmes games and The Sinking City uses some of the same concepts when it comes to figuring stuff out. It’s the Lovecraftian horror where Frogware kind of struggled, I think, especially the weedy combat. Still, it was an enjoyable game that a niche audience will probably love. More than anything The Sinking City got me thinking about the continued popularity of Lovecraft. Now that his work is public domain Cthulhu and his cosmic brethren keep popping up all over the place. The cynical side of me can’t help but think that the appeal is less Lovecraft’s intriguing writings and more the fact that developers get access to a massive wealt...

Weekend Whammy: Skate 3 & The Bloody Rose Band

Why, hello there fine people! Come in, come! Fancy a cuppa? I hope you guys are keeping well and playing hard. There’s a fair few games out at the moment, so we aren’t lacking in choice. Anyway, let’s chat about what I’ve been playing, and please do let me know what you’ve been playing and what you think of it. So, this week I put out a pretty long review of Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 which I ultimately gave a 4 out of 5 too. I was really impressed by how much of an improvement it is over the first game, and how thoroughly it kicked Anthem’s backside. A satisfying swathe of main missions, great loot system and solid end-game all create a game that actually feels good at launch rather than trying to persuade people it’ll be good in the future. The Division 2 is good now, and will hopefully only grow and get better with time. I’m still playing The Division 2 as well, which says something about the strength of its combat and looting. At the moment I’m gearing myself up for the release...

Weekend(ish) Whammy: What The Hell, Activision?

Okay, okay, I may have missed the weekend there. Punctuality is clearly not my strong point. Once again, though, the weekend has steam rolled through our collective lives, leaving behind a mess of bodies and squashed pizzas. So, let’s chat. Review code for Codemaster’s new DiRT Rally 2.0 arrived a while ago so I’m currently working on the review for that. The embargoes have already lifted so I can spoil my own work by saying it’s pretty freaking great. You’ll have to wait for the full review for the details, though. I reviewed some birds in Angry Birds VR: Isle of Pigs which wound up being an entirely okay-ish game. It’s good for a bit of a giggle or just for the kids but outside of that it’s a forgettable, short experience. I’m also going to be reviewing Crackdown 3. It’s downloaded onto my Xbox One X courtesy of Games Pass, but I’ve not got around to actually firing it up yet. The critical reception so far seems poor, though, and the gameplay I’ve watched doesn’t feel me with con...

Weekend Whammy: Christmas Carnage & Virtual Reality

Oh, hello there, weekend! I didn’t see you standing menacingly in the shadows. How are you these fine holidays? What? What’s that? Why have you got that!? No! NO! NOOOOO! Stop stabbing me with a candy cane, you foul beast! ARRRRGGGGHHHHH! Yes, it’s the weekend once again which means it’s time to ramble! If you haven’t already seen it then go and check out my Top 10 Games of 2018 where I will have undoubtedly annoyed about 50% of everybody who reads it because nothing riles up the Internet like a list and opinions! Still, I’m pretty happy with it. It’s mostly big triple-A titles this year but there’s a couple of smaller games in the mix as well. Christmas is looming over us all at the moment, so naturally everything has been chaos. For a change I actually did my Christmas shopping at a reasonable time, though, so at least I’m not running around trying to get presents. Are you guys hoping to get any gaming goodies this year? This week I’ve mostly been playing the crap out of God of W...

Weekend Whammy: What Are You Guys Playing?

The weekend has steamrolled into our lives yet again like some sort of demented rhino looking for its lunch. As I write this I’ve just gotten back from walking the dog and taking my two nieces to the funfair that’s in town, so now it’s time to sit down and fire up some games! So, I’ve managed to resist spending all my time on the absolutely amazing Spider-Man on the PS4 and instead have focused on getting through two games, the first being the new Bard’s Tale title that I got my hands on a good bit before its official release and yet have still somehow managed to fly past the embargo without posting up a review. The problem is I have really mixed feelings on the game that have proven tricky to put into words. It’s a bit of a mess at times with numerous technical failings as well as a bunch of questionable design choices, but buried underneath it all is an interesting little RPG with great turn-based combat and some enjoyable puzzles. I also bought a copy of Shadow of the Tomb Raider...

Patch Notes: Dead Computer Equals Unhappy Me

Hey folks, So, I don’t usually do updates like this but I just wanted to let you all know what is currently going on in the world of Wolf. Simply put, my computer is currently dead. Last week it started acting up and then died completely. I won’t bore you with the symptoms, but suffice to say I went through a lot of potential solutions and then eventually stripped it down part by part in order to locate the fault. I narrowed it down to being either the motherboard, a MSI X370 Titanium, or the Ryzen 5 1600 CPU. Both aren’t even a year old, and neither is even fully paid for yet. I’m pretty sure it’s the motherboard at fault, although I can’t be completely certain. I think it’s the more likely option, though. Anyway, I had to contact the company I bought it from and send it back. It got collected back on April 21st and the fault was a few days before that, so I’ve been without my beloved rig for just over a week and as sad as it sounds I think I’m going a bit crazy. I had a Dead by D...

My Top Ten Games of 2017 (And Some Random Awards)

It’s that time again! Somehow 2017 is almost over, and even though I was looking for it all 365 days seem to have snuck past without me noticing them. Cheeky little bastards! For this site it has been another great year thanks to you guys. The daily views have gone up further, I’ve been fairly happy with the quality of my writing and more and more opportunities have arisen, which again is all thanks to you, dear readers! Without you guys popping on to read the words that my untalented brain and hand come up with I’d never get to check out so many games or test out loads of cool accessories. You are amazing, and I’m so, so grateful that you keep coming back. I love you all. But let’s get on with this list, shall we? As always there are going to be titles that I’ve missed, partly because I’m a PC/Xbox One gamer, and largely because there are a lot of games and not enough time to play them all! And please keep in mind that while I do try to buy games that I don’t get sent to review, I’...
