Merry Christmas! (2017)

My word, it has almost been another whole year! As I write this it’s pretty close to being Christmas day, so I wanted to take a moment and say Merry Christmas to everyone reading this. As always I love you all, and thank you so much for taking the time to read my work and help make this site bigger. You guys are awesome.

Have an awesome day, enjoy your family and friends, and be merry. We should never need an excuse to spend time with our loved ones,  but Christmas still represents that special time of year where we can gather around, eat food, watch movies and commit murder over Monopoly.

Take care.

Call of Cthulhu Review

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PS4 Reviewed On: PS4 Pro Developer: Cyanide Studios Publisher: Focus Home Interactive Singleplayer: Yes Multiplayer: No Could Lovecraft ever have known just how popular his unique brand of cosmic horror would become? Since his work is now public domain the Cthulhu name is everywhere, including literally hundreds of board games, books and video games. You can’t escape tentacles, green mist and hard-boiled detectives going slowly insane, it seems. This Call of Cthulhu sounds like a sequel to Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (released waaay back in 2005/2006) or even like some sort of barmy Call of Duty spinnoff due to its name, but actually this is no relation and instead originates from the tabletop RPG of the same title. That also means that this official video game adaption is more focused on investigation and the trauma of dealing with entities and concepts far beyond what humans can handle, which is more in keeping with Lovecraft’s original...

Wolfenstein: The New Colossus Review

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4 and PC Reviewed On: PC Developer: MachineGames Publisher: Bethesda Singleplayer: Yes Multiplayer: No Review code supplied free of charge by the publisher. A sprawling open-world, microtransactions, RPG levelling mechanics, loot and clusters of mundane side-quests that have been copied and pasted. These, it seems, are the foundations of modern triple-A video game development, the industry pumping them out like there is no tomorrow. And yet here’s is Bethesda and MachineGames putting out a linear, singleplayer FPS without a microtransaction in sight that is easily the best shooter since 2016’s awesome DOOM reboot. It’s almost like you can make a quality game without slapping consumers in the face, isn’t it? So once again the legendary hero and possible immortal super-soldier B.J. Blazkowicz is back to kill a lot of Nazi bad guys. Following on from the events of the last game he’s in somewhat of a bad state, but it isn’t long before he gets a lovely suit ...

Divinity: Original Sin 2 Review

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PS4, Reviewed On: PC Developer: Larian Publisher: Larian Singleplayer: Yes Multiplayer: Yes Review copy provided free of charge by the publisher. Divinity: Original Sin was something of a surprise hit, the RPG managing to once again prove triple-A developers wrong by crafting a game on a budget that went on to sell extremely well. It just goes to show that if you don’t try to please everyone, gear your product toward a certain market and be sensible with your budget you can create something amazing that turns a profit. Now Larian are back with a sequel, and man is it all kinds of awesome. Best RPG since The Witcher 3? Best RPG since The Witcher 3. What probably sticks out most about Original Sin 2 is how it somehow manages to juggle serious story beats with utter lunacy. This is a strange, strange game at times, one where it is possible to play as an undead elf who gains the memories of the deceased by eating their severed body parts, get talked down t...
